Chapter: Neuro

Subchapter: Spine (Read entire chapter)

Diagnosis: Cord compression - due to postoperative hematoma
This patient is status post posterior fusion of C3 to T2 and experienced weakness after the spine surgery. Sagittal T2 weighted image of the cervical spine demonstrates substantial dorsal fluid in the paraspinal soft tissues (asterisks). These collections are most prominent at C4-C5 and C6-C7 where they cause severe compression on the spinal cord (arrows). The overall appearance of this heterogeneous fluid collection (white and black asterisks) suggests a mixture of seroma and loculated hematomas which are responsible for the dorsally applied mass effect.
