Chapter: Abdomen & Pelvis

Subchapter: Gastrointestinal tract (Read entire chapter)

Diagnosis: Appendicitis caused by an appendicolith
Axial contrast enhanced CT of the abdomen: The appendix is fluid-filled and dilated (full white arrow), up to 1.7 cm. A 1.4 x 0.9 cm appendicolith is noted in the proximal appendix (dotted white arrow). Also noted is peri-appendiceal fat stranding (black arrow), sign of an acute inflammatory process. An appendix diameter larger than 6 mm, fluid filled appendix, appendicolith, and peri-appendiceal fat stranding are indicative of acute appendicitis.
